Abstract

The article presents an experimental study on the properties of solid fuel fire whirls, focusing on the effects of imposed and fuel rotation on mass burning rate, flame geometry, and emission characteristics. The authors use a medium-scale rotating screen facility to generate fire whirls from different types of forest fuels, such as pine needles, Shorea Robusta, and Grevillea Robusta. The study reveals that the mass burning rate and heat release rate increase significantly with imposed circulation, while the flame height and radiative heat flux also show notable variations. Additionally, the emission characteristics of the fire whirls are analyzed, showing reduced concentrations of pollutants like CO and CO2 with increased circulation. The findings are compared with existing literature and discussed in the context of developing predictive models for fire whirls, highlighting the importance of understanding these phenomena for wildfire management and environmental safety.
