Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of infrared (IR) sensors in monitoring air quality, particularly when mounted on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The study focuses on the impact of temperature and vibration on the performance of these sensors, which are essential for detecting carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere. The experimental setup involved a custom test bench that simulated the operational conditions experienced by drone-mounted systems, including temperature variations and mechanical vibrations. The results revealed that while temperature fluctuations caused moderate signal distortion, mechanical vibrations had a severe impact, leading to signal incoherence and rendering measurements unreliable. The chapter discusses the implications of these findings for the design and integration of IR sensors on UAVs, emphasizing the need for effective vibration mitigation strategies. It also provides practical guidelines for future deployments, making it a valuable resource for professionals in environmental monitoring and drone technology.
