Abstract

This chapter delves into an experimental study that examines the influence of height and masonry type on the performance of arch masonry earth retaining walls. The research focuses on four key areas: the design of arch walls, material properties, instrumentation, and soil backfill and surcharge loading. The study reveals that arch masonry walls exhibit remarkable structural stability and minimal deformation under applied loading conditions. Notably, the brick wall demonstrated a pronounced arching effect, displaying a stiffer response compared to the hollow block wall. The findings highlight the potential of arch action in enhancing the performance of earth retaining structures, offering practical insights for engineers and architects. The study concludes that the height of the wall and the type of masonry unit significantly impact the structural behavior of arch retaining walls, providing valuable data for future design and construction practices.
