Abstract

The article presents an experimental study on a funnel-type grating water-sediment separation structure designed to manage debris flows. Debris flows are a significant natural hazard, causing erosion and damage to infrastructure. Traditional solid dams have limitations, prompting the development of permeable dams, which offer better sediment management. The new structure combines a horizontal grating with flexible barriers, aiming to continuously separate water and sediment from debris flows. The study includes flume tests to evaluate the structure's performance in separating different particle sizes and regulating debris flow characteristics such as density, velocity, and average particle size. The results show that the structure effectively separates coarse particles, reducing debris flow scale and hazard. The study also highlights the importance of considering debris flow density and velocity in the design and optimization of such structures for effective debris flow management.
