Abstract

This chapter explores the critical factors influencing door capacity during emergency evacuations, focusing on experimental data and behavioral observations. The study investigates how varying door widths and population densities affect evacuation times and crowd dynamics, with a particular emphasis on the role of buffer zones. Through meticulous experimentation and analysis, the chapter reveals that wider doors and the presence of buffer zones significantly reduce total evacuation times and improve flow rates. The research also delves into the phenomenon of herding behavior, where individuals tend to choose congested exits, and how this affects overall evacuation efficiency. Additionally, the chapter examines the impact of different walking behaviors on evacuation times, highlighting the importance of considering individual variations in movement. The findings provide valuable insights into optimizing evacuation strategies and enhancing safety in buildings and transportation facilities, making this chapter an essential read for anyone involved in emergency planning and safety management.
