Abstract

The chapter delves into the application of explicit dynamic finite element analysis (FEA) using LS-DYNA software to simulate low-velocity impacts on aerospace structures. It aims to localize acoustic emissions (AEs) released from these impacts to detect barely visible impact damage (BVID) in fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs). The study begins with an introduction to low-velocity impacts and their severe effects on the mechanical performance of FRPs. It then explores the use of LS-DYNA for simulating these impacts and analyzing the resulting AEs. The chapter highlights the resonance characteristics of the plate under impact and discusses methods for localizing the source of AEs. It also presents preliminary results from impact trials on an aluminum plate, showcasing the model's capability to accurately depict impact events and the emissions that result from them. The work concludes with plans for further research on impacts upon FRP materials, emphasizing the challenges and proposed solutions for localizing AE signals in these complex materials.
