Abstract

This chapter delves into the mechanical properties and applications of new generation helically deformed glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars, focusing on their potential as internal reinforcement in reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The study conducts extensive mechanical testing, including tensile, transverse shear, horizontal shear, and pullout tests, to evaluate the suitability of these bars. The research highlights the tensile properties, bond strength, and shear strength of GFRP bars with diameters of 13 mm and 22 mm, demonstrating their compliance with contemporary standards like CSA S807-19. Additionally, the chapter presents real-world applications of these GFRP bars in various projects, such as the Wendeng Pumped Storage Power Station and a factory in Beauceville, Quebec. The findings indicate that the new generation GFRP bars exhibit satisfactory tensile properties, with a noted decrease in tensile strength as the diameter increases. The transverse shear and apparent horizontal shear strength of the bars are within the limits specified by CSA S807-19. Furthermore, the pullout tests reveal a strong bond between the GFRP bars and concrete, with bond strengths significantly higher than the provision limits. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the potential of these GFRP bars for the construction industry, supported by their successful implementation in diverse projects.
