Abstract

This study delves into the potential of real-time crash risk data for enhancing urban traffic safety. It evaluates the use of autonomous vehicle (AV) data to identify crash-prone locations and develop dynamic safety measures. The research highlights the limitations of traditional methods, such as historical crash data and traffic conflict studies, which often result in reactive or incomplete safety assessments. By leveraging AV data, the study demonstrates how crash risk can be assessed dynamically, allowing for more proactive and targeted safety interventions. The concept of crash risk chronicity is introduced, which helps decision-makers determine whether infrastructure improvements or real-time intelligent transportation systems (ITS) solutions are more appropriate. The study also explores the spatial effects of crash risk, providing insights into how AV route choices can impact safety. Overall, the research presents a promising approach to improving urban traffic safety through the use of real-time crash risk data and AV technology.
