Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of the social-ecological systems (SES) approach in urban green infrastructure (GI) planning, focusing on creating sustainable and climate-resilient cities. It explores how GI, defined as a network of ecosystems providing essential services, can mitigate the impacts of urbanization and climate change. The chapter highlights the interdependence between human society and ecology, emphasizing the importance of understanding this relationship for building resilient urban environments. Key themes include public participation in GI planning, the significance of economically weaker sections, the mutual influence of social and ecological systems, and the need for a collaborative approach. The chapter reviews academic literature and analyzes case studies from Bengaluru and Chandigarh, demonstrating the practical application of the SES approach in urban planning. It concludes that integrating social-ecological aspects into GI planning is crucial for achieving sustainability and climate resilience, offering valuable insights for professionals in urban planning and environmental conservation.
