Abstract

This study explores the use of Google Earth Engine (GEE) datasets and machine learning techniques to map aquaculture ponds in the Krishna River Delta, South India. The research focuses on the application of the Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) and the Random Forest (RF) algorithm to accurately identify and map aquaculture ponds. The study area, the Krishna Delta, is known for its fertile land and extensive water resources, making it ideal for aquaculture. The methodology involves acquiring Sentinel-2 imagery, pre-processing the data, and applying the MNDWI and RF classifier to detect water bodies. The results show that positive MNDWI values indicate suitable areas for aquaculture, with higher values representing clearer water bodies. The study also validates the accuracy of the mapped aquaculture ponds by comparing them with existing aquafarms. The findings highlight the potential of remote sensing and machine learning techniques for sustainable aquaculture management and provide valuable insights for professionals in the field.
