Fabrication of polyaniline doped with Zr4+ for supercapacitors

Abstract

The electrodes of conducting polymers polyaniline (PANI) and polyaniline doped with zirconium ions (PANI/Zr4+) were synthesized by interfacial polymerization strategy. The structures and morphologies of PANI and PANI/Zr4+ nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques, respectively. The electrochemical properties of PANI and PANI/Zr4+ electrodes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge–discharge test, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte in three-electrode system. The effect of doping concentrations of zirconium ions (Zr4+) varied from 0.04 to 0.20 M on the specific capacitance of PANI were studied. In comparison with PANI electrode, the PANI/Zr4+ electrode indicated higher capacitance value (416 F g−1), lower resistance and better stability when the concentration of Zr4+ is 0.08 M, which demonstrated its potential superiority for supercapacitors.
