Abstract

This chapter delves into the transformative potential of additive façade strategies to redefine comfort and sustainability in residential architecture. By examining the intersection of architecture and technology, it explores how innovative façade systems can address critical issues such as energy optimization, health risks, and social marginalization. The research, conducted within the iNEST Ecosystem, focuses on the role of intermediate spaces in facilitating transitions and enhancing the quality of residential environments. A systematic literature review identifies key technologies and methodologies that can be applied to existing buildings, emphasizing replicability and large-scale efficiency. The chapter also presents case studies from Europe, illustrating successful implementations of additive façade solutions that improve inhabitants' well-being and comfort. Furthermore, it proposes an evaluation framework to guide the selection and implementation of these systems, considering both building-related and user-related criteria. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the regenerative and transformative capacities of buildings, highlighting the importance of integrating new needs and forms of living into existing structures.
