Abstract

This chapter delves into the structural health of French Colonial Architecture (FCA) in Vietnam, focusing on Hanoi's iconic buildings. It examines the unique blend of European techniques and local conditions that shaped these structures, highlighting the use of materials like brick, stone, metal, wood, and reinforced concrete. The text explores the current state of these buildings, which are over 100 years old and have undergone multiple ownership changes, leading to significant deterioration. It identifies three main groups of factors affecting their structural health: intrinsic factors like material aging and stress distribution, natural environmental factors such as climate change and pollution, and socio-environmental factors including political changes and urbanization. The chapter also discusses the importance of structural modeling and monitoring for preserving these historic buildings. It concludes with a call for a scientifically based conservation strategy to maintain the architectural and historical values of FCA amidst natural and social pressures.
