Abstract

The chapter investigates the factors influencing changes in estimated food insecurity rates in developing countries before and after COVID-19. It highlights the significant impact of the pandemic on global food security, with high unemployment rates, international trading restrictions, and quarantine policies exacerbating food insecurity. The study focuses on the relationships between GDP per capita before COVID-19 and the change in estimated food insecurity rate, as well as the relationship between confirmed COVID-19 rates and food insecurity changes. Using data from the World Bank, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and the US Department of Agriculture, the author builds linear models to test these relationships. The analysis reveals that neither GDP per capita nor COVID-19 rates have a significant linear relationship with changes in food insecurity rates. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for further research using real food security data when available, and the importance of expanding the study to include developed countries for a more comprehensive understanding of global food security vulnerabilities during the pandemic.
