Abstract

This chapter presents a meticulous investigation into the failure of a superheater drain tube in a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) after two decades of service. The analysis reveals that the primary cause of failure was corrosion under insulation (CUI), leading to significant wall thinning and eventual leakage. The study employs a range of analytical techniques, including field observation, visual inspection, metallography, and chemical analysis, to unravel the complex interplay of factors contributing to the failure. Key findings include the identification of hematite and magnetite in the rust scale, the presence of chloride traces, and the critical role of improper insulation and clamp installation in facilitating water ingress. The chapter offers a detailed examination of the corrosion products and mechanisms, providing a clear understanding of how CUI progresses and the conditions that exacerbate it. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of adhering to standard installation practices and using appropriate insulation materials to prevent similar failures, making it an essential read for those seeking to enhance the reliability and longevity of HRSG systems.
