Abstract

The article delves into the pervasive issue of fake news on social media, emphasizing its severe impact and the urgent need for effective detection and mitigation strategies. It begins by defining fake news and its historical context, then discusses the various types of fake news and their characteristics. The authors highlight the challenges in detecting fake news due to its deceptive nature and the rapid spread facilitated by social media. They also explore the role of social bots, user awareness, and the dynamic nature of online platforms in exacerbating the problem. The article reviews existing datasets and detection methods, categorizing them into content-based, contextual, and hybrid approaches. It critically evaluates the limitations of current techniques and proposes recommendations for future research directions, making it a valuable resource for professionals and researchers in the field.
