Abstract

The article examines the preference for crop diversification in India, focusing on the kharif season. It discusses the risks associated with agriculture, the negative impacts of climate change, and the benefits of crop diversification. The study uses nationally representative data to analyze the role of crop insurance in adopting crop diversification, employing logit and ordered logit models. The findings reveal a positive association between crop insurance and crop diversification, indicating that farmers use both strategies to manage risks. The article also identifies other key determinants such as household size, land size, per-capita consumption expenditure, and access to irrigation. It concludes by suggesting policy interventions to promote crop diversification and improve agricultural resilience.

3
Less than 1 percent of farmers cultivated more than six crops in the kharif season of 2018–19, so we grouped it as six or more crops for the empirical analysis. Appendix 3 shows the empirical analysis without grouping them.

We have performed the LRT test by comparing our current model with different reduced models (with fewer predictors). The null hypothesis of LRT states that the reduced model fits the data equally well as the entire model. This hypothesis is rejected across all the reported models since the p-value of LRT was extremely low.
