Abstract

This chapter delves into the fatigue life of refurbished fiber reinforced thermoplastics (FRTP), specifically focusing on the potential of reusing these materials to reduce waste and promote a circular economy. The study examines the use of organic sheets in the automotive industry, where composites are increasingly replacing metallic materials due to their superior mechanical properties. However, the high material costs and complex production processes have hindered their widespread adoption. The chapter explores end-of-life (EoL) strategies for composites, highlighting the challenges and potential of recycling, reuse, and refurbishment. The refurbishment approach, which takes advantage of the reversible melting capability of thermoplastics, is particularly promising. The study evaluates the fatigue life of refurbished organic sheets, demonstrating that they can retain their mechanical properties and be reused without significant degradation. This research not only contributes to the development of sustainable manufacturing practices but also offers valuable insights into the potential of refurbishment in reducing the carbon footprint of FRTPs.
