Abstract

The chapter delves into the potential of Augmented Reality (AR) in the commissioning of industrial robot plants, specifically focusing on the integration with Offline Programming (OLP). It begins by highlighting the importance of efficient robot programming methods in the lifecycle of an industrial robot plant. The authors then discuss the current state of Offline Programming (OLP) and its limitations, setting the stage for the exploration of AR's capabilities. The chapter presents a feasible use case that combines AR and OLP, detailing the development and implementation of an AR application in a mock-up environment. A user study is conducted to compare the effectiveness of AR-assisted programming with traditional Teach-In methods, providing valuable insights into the practicality and limitations of AR in this context. The study indicates that while AR shows promise, depth perception issues with current AR displays can impact the quality of commissioned programs. The chapter concludes by discussing the potential of AR and OLP in the context of Industry 4.0 and outlines future research directions.
