Abstract

The article presents a feasibility study on the use of coplanar capacitive sensing technique for underwater non-destructive evaluation. It discusses the increasing utilization of diverse materials in marine environments and the need for effective NDE techniques. The study focuses on the coplanar capacitive sensing technique, which has shown promise in NDE of land-based structures but remains underexplored for underwater applications. The article covers the principles of underwater NDE using coplanar capacitive sensors, including modifications to Maxwell’s equations for conductive media. It presents simulations and experiments on detecting defects in non-conducting and conducting materials immersed in deionized water, tap water, and seawater. The study highlights the challenges and advantages of using bare-electrode and insulated-electrode coplanar capacitive sensors, and discusses the impact of water conductivity and specimen type on sensor performance. The experimental results validate the feasibility of underwater NDE using coplanar capacitive sensing technique, but also highlight the need for further research to optimize sensor performance and imaging processes.
