Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate dynamics of seiche oscillations in systems of adjacent bays, highlighting the potential dangers they pose to coastal infrastructure and moored vessels. The study employs advanced numerical modeling using the FUNWAVE hydrodynamic model to simulate the impact of solitary waves, such as tsunamis, on two bays of different sizes. Key findings reveal that the Helmholtz mode, the longest period oscillation, dominates in larger bays and can significantly influence smaller adjacent bays. The research also explores how the distance between bays affects the intensity of these oscillations, with notable interactions and energy exchanges observed. Additionally, the study investigates the generation of transverse seiche modes by solitary waves, which can reach high intensities and pose risks to ships in ports. The conclusions provide critical insights into the behavior of seiche oscillations in connected bay systems, offering valuable data for the design and construction of artificial harbors to mitigate potential hazards.
