Abstract

The article delves into the potential of fecal steroids as a novel proxy for reconstructing past megafauna communities in East Africa, a region crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems and regional economies. Since the late Pleistocene, terrestrial megafauna has declined globally, with East Africa experiencing modest extinctions compared to other continents. The study aims to develop new proxies to overcome the limitations of using sub-fossil remains, focusing on fecal steroids preserved in sedimentary archives. These steroids, present in dung, can provide a diagnostic profile of fecal steroid composition, varying among species due to diet and digestive biochemistry. The research involves collecting modern dung samples from wild East African megafauna to create a training set for identifying dung origins accurately. The study area, the Maasai Mara National Reserve and Serengeti National Park, is characterized by high wildlife abundance and diversity, influenced by rainfall patterns. The article highlights the potential of fecal steroids to reconstruct megafauna communities over the Holocene, providing valuable insights into how species responded to natural climate variability and offering a context for recent and predicted changes.
