Abstract

The chapter delves into the application of Fourier spectral methods in time-dependent problems, highlighting the issue of spurious oscillations caused by discontinuities. It compares various filters such as Lanczos, raised cosine, and adaptive filters, demonstrating their impact on convergence rates and accuracy. Notably, the adaptive filtering method developed by Tadmor and Tanner shows promise in improving accuracy away from discontinuities, making this chapter a valuable resource for specialists in numerical analysis and applied mathematics.
