Abstract

This chapter delves into the fire-retardant properties of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) biocomposites and bionanocomposites, focusing on their composition, manufacturing processes, and the role of reinforcing and non-reinforcing additives. It explores the mechanisms behind fire retardancy, including gas-phase, condensed-phase, and cooling mechanisms, and discusses various types of fire-retardant additives such as phosphorus-based, halogen-based, inorganic fillers, and nanostructured additives. The text also highlights the synergistic effects and interactions between different additives, enhancing the overall fire resistance of SBR biocomposites. Recent advances in SBR biocomposites for fire retardancy are examined, including the use of natural lignocellulosic fillers, clays, and intumescent systems.
