Abstract

The article delves into the complex behavior of jet fires in pits (JFPs) at different burial depths, focusing on the geometrical features and temperature distribution of these fires. It highlights the significance of understanding JFPs in urban settings where underground gas pipelines are prevalent. The study presents experimental data and correlations for flame length, width, and temperature, which are crucial for assessing the safety and thermal hazards associated with JFPs. The research also proposes a new characteristic length scale for the dimensionless heat release rate, which significantly improves the accuracy of flame length and width correlations. Additionally, the article introduces temperature correlations for different flame patterns, providing valuable insights into the thermal behavior of JFPs. The findings have practical implications for enhancing the safety of underground gas pipelines and managing the risks associated with JFPs.
