Abstract

This chapter delves into the flammability performance of graphene-infused sisal/epoxy and hemp/epoxy composites, focusing on their potential for sustainable and fire-resistant applications. The study examines the use of graphene nanoparticles to improve the fire resistance of biocomposites, comparing the performance of sisal and hemp-based nanocomposites through UL-94 vertical and horizontal burn tests. Key findings include the superior vertical burn characteristics of hemp-based nanocomposites, which exhibited a V-1 rating compared to the V-2 rating of sisal-based nanocomposites. The study also highlights the influence of graphene nanofiller proportion on burn time and burn rate, with the addition of nanofillers reducing burn time significantly in sisal/epoxy composites. The results suggest that these biocomposites could be suitable for fire-sensitive applications, offering an economic and environmentally friendly solution.
