About this book

This book highlights the design and performance of bio-inspired approach to a flying drone design. The flying drone design in this book is a micro-air vehicle (MAV) where the wingspan of the drone is less than 15cm. It focuses on the wing design of the MAV which is a flapping wing that is based on bat wings. In the first part, this book delves into the past work that has been done in this area and gives a bigger picture of the design approach as well as the blind spots that are in the field. In the second part, the book presents a novel design process with experiments that have been done to measure the performance of the design.

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
This chapter introduces to the concept of bio-inspiration design, and basics concepts of micro air vehicles. This chapter also showcase the design problems ins MAV designs and the problems of bio-inspiration approach.
Shafiq Bin Suhaimi, Solehuddin Shuib, Hamid Yusoff
Chapter 2. Bio-inspired Flyers
Abstract
This chapter is the background study where it begins with the known observations done by experts in the field of bat behaviour and morphology. The background research will be followed by a systematic study done on all the previous methodologies in the field Biomimicry and Bio-Inspired MAV wings. The background research will then end with a look at all the known aerodynamic phenomenon involved with the problem.
Shafiq Bin Suhaimi, Solehuddin Shuib, Hamid Yusoff
Chapter 3. Bat-Inspired Wing Design
Abstract
In this chapter, the approach of the book is outlined where it begins with the method used for wing generation and then followed by the flight conditions used. It is then followed by the simulation approach used and the test procedures that were used. The study will end with the final semi-active mechanism study that was done.
Shafiq Bin Suhaimi, Solehuddin Shuib, Hamid Yusoff
Chapter 4. Bat-Inspired Wing Performance
Abstract
In this chapter, the result of the study will be outlined that begins with the aerodynamic result found in all the different wing geometries. This is then followed by the overall comparisons between all the wing geometries. This chapter will end with the results for the wings that include the semi-active mechanism and the difference that the machine has made.
Shafiq Bin Suhaimi, Solehuddin Shuib, Hamid Yusoff
Chapter 5. Final Thoughts
Abstract
The main goal of the book was to study the aerodynamic effects of a bio-inspiration approach to MAV design. This was done by designing a flapping wing MAV design that was derived from observations made on batwings. From the works that have been done, several final thoughts can be made.
