Abstract

This chapter explores the integration of thermal energy storage (TES) in industrial parks to enhance energy system flexibility and reduce operating costs. The study constructs an integrated industrial park district heating (DH) system and evaluates the flexibility enhancement potential using demand stability and supply adequacy as key indicators. It analyzes the impact of TES on different industrial parks with varying capacities and load characteristics, demonstrating significant improvements in flexibility and up to 62% savings in operating costs. The research also highlights the importance of selecting appropriate metrics to quantify flexibility, guiding the design of heating systems to balance economy and flexibility. The study concludes that TES can significantly enhance the flexibility potential of industrial complex heating systems, ensuring they can cope with various uncertainties while optimizing energy usage and reducing costs.
