Abstract

This study delves into the retrofitting of glued-laminated (glulam) timber beams using externally bonded fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the construction industry. The research focuses on changing the failure mode of flexure-critical glulam beams from tension to compression, thereby increasing their load-carrying capacity. The study employs advanced sensing technology, specifically distributed fibre optic sensors (DFOS), to measure strains with high resolution and accuracy along the entire length of the beams. The experimental programme involves testing two glulam beams in four-point bending, with one beam serving as a control and the other retrofitted with unidirectional carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. The results demonstrate a 47.5% increase in capacity for the retrofitted beam, achieving a ductile compression failure instead of a brittle tension failure. The study also compares theoretical predictions with experimental results, highlighting the effectiveness of the retrofit configuration and the potential for further optimization. The use of DFOS provides valuable insights into the strain distributions and behaviour of the retrofitted beams, contributing to the development of more accurate design standards for FRP reinforcement in timber structures.
