Abstract

The chapter discusses the migration of people from rural to urban areas and its impact on land use and land cover (LULC) changes, which affect surface runoff and increase flood frequency. Traditional statistical methods for flood forecasting are compared with integrated geospatial techniques and hydrologic modeling. The chapter highlights the importance of understanding LULC changes and their influence on urban flooding, emphasizing the use of advanced models like HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS. Case studies from various cities, including Mumbai, Guwahati, and Bengaluru, illustrate the practical application of these methods. The chapter concludes with a focus on the Koraiyar River basin in Tiruchirappalli, India, demonstrating the development of floodplain and hazard maps for different return periods and the prediction of future LULC changes using the Markov model. The study aims to provide a robust framework for flood risk assessment and management in urban environments.
