Hydro power plants are operated in synchronous condenser mode in an increasing part. This paper deals with the technical description of a test rig located at the hydraulic laboratory of Institute for Energy Systems and Thermodynamics (IET). After a short introduction the model pump turbine and the experimental setup are presented. Basic instrumentation as shaft torque or runner speed is described. Furthermore the fast response pressure transducers and the instrumentation of the transparent draft tube cone are explained. …
