Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical role of flow simulation in choke valves for the offshore oil industry, highlighting the evolution from empirical correlations to advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. It discusses the challenges posed by multiphase flow and the importance of predicting cavitation regions for better equipment design. The methodology involves using OpenFOAM to simulate flow conditions at different valve openings, with a focus on the critical strangulation region. The results show good agreement between numerical and experimental data, particularly for less restrictive conditions. However, compressible effects become significant at higher restrictions, affecting simulation accuracy. The study concludes with a call for further research into compressible solvers to improve simulation precision. The chapter offers valuable insights into optimizing valve performance and ensuring equipment integrity in high-pressure offshore environments.
