Flowability enhancement of waxy crude oil using gamma-irradiated EVA-copolymers grafted with novel functionalized monomers

Abstract

The increasing demand for oil has driven exploration into harsher and colder environments, where wax deposition in crude oil pipelines poses significant challenges. This article addresses these issues by presenting a novel approach to enhancing the flowability of waxy crude oil using gamma-irradiated ethylene–vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers grafted with long-chain functionalized monomers. The study synthesizes two novel esters, 4-(Hexadecyl oxy) allyl Benzoate (HDOAB) and 1-Hexadecyl-3-((allyloxy)carbonyl) pyridine-1-ium Bromide (HDAOCP), which are then grafted onto EVA copolymers via gamma irradiation. The resulting grafted copolymers, EVA-g-p(HDOAB) and EVA-g-p(HDAOCP), demonstrate superior pour point depression and viscosity reduction compared to unmodified EVA. Spectroscopic analyses confirm the successful grafting, while rheological tests reveal significant improvements in the flow properties of treated crude oil. The article also compares the performance of the grafted copolymers with previous studies, underscoring the efficacy of gamma-induced grafting in developing high-performance pour point depressants. This research offers valuable insights into the development of advanced materials for enhancing oil flow in challenging environments, with potential applications in various industrial sectors.
