14. Food Security Sustainability in Southern Africa in the Context of African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA)

This chapter examines the potential effects of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) on food security and sustainability in Southern Africa. It highlights the region's vulnerability to food insecurity due to climate change, poverty, and limited agricultural productivity, while also exploring the potential benefits of increased market access and reduced tariffs. The chapter reviews existing research and uses the WITS-SMART simulation model to predict trade dynamics, focusing on the impacts on specific countries and products. It also discusses the challenges and opportunities presented by the AfCFTA, including the potential for trade creation and diversion, and the need for concerted action to address the rising challenges of food security and nutrition in Southern Africa. The findings reveal that while the AfCFTA has the potential to boost trade and economic cooperation among African nations, its impact on food sustainability in Southern Africa remains uncertain and warrants careful consideration.
