Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical vulnerabilities of Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT)-based group key management (GKM) schemes when faced with strong active outsider adversaries (SAOA). It begins by outlining the fundamental requirements of GKM, including forward and backward secrecy, and the challenges posed by dynamic group membership. The chapter then explores various existing GKM protocols, highlighting their limitations under the SAOA model, where adversaries can compromise legitimate members and extract sensitive information. A particular focus is placed on CRT-based schemes, which, despite their efficiency, are shown to be susceptible to retroactive exposure of historical communications. The chapter introduces a novel CRT-based GKM framework that retains the efficiency benefits of modular arithmetic while introducing robust defenses against SAOA attacks. This proposed scheme addresses the weaknesses identified in prior work and strengthens the practical applicability of CRT-based techniques for secure, large-scale group communication systems. The chapter also provides a detailed performance analysis, comparing the proposed scheme with traditional and straightforward approaches, demonstrating its superiority in terms of computational and communication efficiency. The conclusion underscores the adaptability of the proposed mechanism and its relevance for real-world secure group communication scenarios, while also outlining potential directions for future research.
