With marine emissions legislation in the balance, it is easy to forget that stationary engines are also subject to emissions regulations and incentives. The market for low and medium speed diesels may be predominantly marine, but four-strokes burning heavy fuel are a popular solution for urgently needed power generation in developing countries. Large diesel generators can be rapidly set up and generate power within months. Highly effective emissions reduction systems, integrated onto the engine — such as two-stage turbocharging — are thus an ideal way of avoiding aftertreatment costs while ensuring low emissions from the first kW generated. …
