Abstract

This chapter delves into the housing conditions of migrant construction workers in India, who often face poor living standards due to their socio-economic background and the nature of their work. The study identifies two main types of temporary accommodations: employer-provided facilities and low-cost informal housing. Focusing on employer-provided accommodations, the research explores the health hazards associated with inadequate housing conditions, such as crowding, poor ventilation, and exposure to pollutants. The chapter introduces a conceptual framework based on the World Health Organization's guidelines, linking housing conditions to the built environment and health impacts. Through an extensive literature review and policy analysis, the study identifies 16 critical housing conditions and their correlation with health hazards. The methodology involves a four-stage process: exploring contextual factors, examining the correlation between housing conditions and health, enlisting aspects of the built environment, and preparing an evaluation framework. The assessment framework is designed to be practical and adaptable, catering to different contextual backgrounds and housing typologies. It aims to identify housing conditions, assess the built environment, and provide targeted solutions for improvement. The framework also evaluates the role of governance and policy implementation in ensuring healthy housing conditions. This study offers a comprehensive tool for stakeholders to explore, assess, and improve the housing conditions of construction workers, ultimately promoting their health and well-being.
