Abstract

This chapter delves into the visual representations of garment factories in the Eastside of Los Angeles as depicted in Christina Fernandez's mixed media work, Manuela S-T-I-T-C-H-E-D. Through an analysis of selected photographs and an embroidery text panel, the chapter explores how these representations frame places of concealment, invisibility, and disarray. The discussion is contextualized by an examination of the historical and social dimensions of the Eastside communities, as well as the working conditions in Los Angeles' garment factories. The chapter also investigates how Fernandez's own subjectivity and experiences inform her artistic practice. Key topics include the interplay between visibility and invisibility in the urban landscape, the social and historical contexts of the Eastside communities, and the representation of labor struggles and migration experiences. The chapter concludes by highlighting the distinct representations of garment factories as places of control, visibility and invisibility, fear and disarray, and the artist's position outside the experiences she depicts.
