Abstract

The article explores the profound transformation in West Africa's balance of power, marked by the decline of French influence and the growing presence of non-Western states like Russia. It delves into Nigeria's historical role as a leader in ECOWAS and the challenges it currently faces, including political crises, economic instability, and the formation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). The text also examines the evolving integration models within ECOWAS and the implications of Russia's increased involvement in the region. Through interviews with Nigerian experts, the article provides a comprehensive analysis of Nigeria's strategic reorientation and the potential for a multipolar order in West Africa. It concludes by highlighting the need for Nigeria to balance domestic resilience with proactive diplomacy to reassert its leadership and foster collective prosperity in the region.
