Abstract

The article delves into the intricate dynamics of friction, particularly focusing on the resonance enhancement of friction force peaks observed in experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. It explains these peaks as a manifestation of autoparametric resonance, a purely mechanical phenomenon independent of the types of phonons produced. The generalized PT approach, incorporating two flexible elements and two damping parameters, is used to model the system, revealing a rich dynamics of the combined tip-cantilever motion. The article highlights the appearance of 'rational' peaks at scanning velocities corresponding to rational parts of the cantilever frequency, indicating that friction force is systematically larger over a wide velocity range. The resonance enhancement is shown to be general and applicable to any type of frictional energy dissipation in the solid. The findings challenge existing hypotheses and offer new insights into the fundamental understanding of friction.
