Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of gas sensors and electronic nose systems in detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs), essential for environmental monitoring, food safety, and medical diagnostics. Through a bibliometric analysis, it identifies the most productive authors, countries, and journals contributing to this field, highlighting China, the United States, Italy, and India as leaders in research. The study also explores current trends in improving sensor performance and optimizing electronic nose systems, addressing challenges such as sensor drift and selectivity. A short survey of gas sensors and technologies for enhancing their performance provides practical insights. The analysis reveals a growing interest in research on gas sensors and electronic noses, with significant advancements and ongoing challenges in sensor performance and optimization. The chapter concludes by suggesting future research directions, particularly in designing selective and cost-effective electronic noses with reduced drift.
