Abstract

From risk reduction to a landscape of (un)desired outcomes: Climate migrants’ perceptions of migration success and failure delves into the perspectives of climate migrants from northern Kenya who have moved to Nairobi due to severe droughts. The study aims to fill a gap in current research by examining how migrants define success and failure in their migration journey, moving beyond the narrow focus on climate risk reduction. By conducting in-depth interviews with migrants, the study uncovers a rich tapestry of adaptation strategies and social-cultural factors that influence their perceptions. Key findings include the importance of supporting households through remittances, the role of education in adaptation, and the preservation of cultural identity. The research underscores the need for a more holistic understanding of migration outcomes, one that acknowledges the multifaceted nature of success and failure as perceived by migrants themselves. This study not only advances the theoretical understanding of climate migration but also provides practical insights for policymakers aiming to improve migration outcomes and support climate adaptation strategies.
