Although this symposium pertains to observation through drilling of the continental crust, I was asked by the planners of this meeting to present a paper showing the frontiers where significant oil and gas resources may be found. These areas lie onshore and offshore and new concepts and techniques in drilling, whether or not discussed in this meeting, will certainly be applied to the tests which will be drilled in the areas referred to in my paper. The state-of-the-art in drilling wells—shallow or deep—has progressed through the years and will continue to do so as time goes on. What we know about drilling today will be improved exponentially in the years to come.
