Abstract

This chapter delves into the challenges posed by frosting on air source heat pumps (ASHPs) in high humidity regions of China, focusing on the Characteristic Index for Configuration and Operation (CICO) and its impact on performance. It introduces a new design method that uses the CICO-based Equivalent Temperature Drop (ETD) to assess and mitigate frosting losses. The chapter also presents a frost suppression grading framework, categorizing ASHPs based on their frost suppression capabilities. Through a case study of 161 cities, it provides specific CICO recommendations tailored to different regions, aiming to enhance the efficiency and reliability of ASHPs in humid climates. The findings highlight the importance of region-specific design to achieve optimal performance and energy efficiency.
