Abstract

This chapter delves into the full-scale experimentation of pre-stressed concrete girders during post-tensioning, focusing on understanding the behavior of high-tensile steel tendons and the impact of friction losses. The research involves testing 30-meter span bridge girders from a Light Railway Transit (LRT) bridge project in Egypt, providing real-world data that eliminates errors from geometrical sampling size effects. Key topics include the study of tendon behavior during jacking, measurement of tendon strains, and the assessment of initial losses along the tendon length. The methodology involves equipping tendons with strain gauges at various points along the girder span and conducting sequential jacking of the girders' cables. The results highlight the propagation of strain across the tendon profile, the effect of jacking other tendons on the measured tendon, and the variability in strain distribution due to factors such as wire length and local obstructions.
