Abstract

Globally, career construction (CC) for learners with visual impairment (LVI) continues to be a challenge, despite enacted policies on inclusive education. In South Africa, literature suggests that teachers, especially full-service schoolteachers, are failing in implementing CC for LVI. Yet, few studies have been conducted to find out why. The aim of this study was to explore €their views. Data were generated through 45 interviews and participatory action research workshops and thematic analysed. Career construction theory underpinned this study. Despite the support given to full-service schoolteachers to implementing CC for LVI, teachers indicate that they need more skills and resources.

Disabled in this paper is used intentionally to highlight a social definition of disability which acknowledges that, society creates disabling conditions for people living with disabilities (PwD) through social exclusion in different spheres of life, including work, education and training of PwD (see the United Nations’ (2009) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities).

In SA, learners who cannot be accommodated in special schools or resource centres, for reasons such as distance and availability of special schools or resource centres nearby, learners living with various disabilities must be placed in full-service schools. Full-service schools are “first and foremost mainstream education institutions that provide equality education to all learners by supplying the full range of learning needs in an equitable manner as they strive to achieve access, equity, quality and social justice in education” (DBE, 2010a, p. 7). The hope is that all schools will operate in the model of a full-service school.
