The Authors’ corporate direction is to contribute to improve the environment and human health. Particulate matter emitted from internal combustion engines is recognised as harmful to human health.
Due to the health impact of particulate emissions, authorities have introduced legislation to regulate particulate emissions and continue to reduce the target that OEM’s must achieve.
Because of the reasons mentioned above, DENSO is developing technology focused on reducing particle emissions.
There are several approaches to reduce pollutant emissions from passenger cars. Those being investigated are, for example, after-treatment (gasoline particulate filter), cleaner combustion (FIE), alternative energy sources (hybridisation etc.) etc.
DENSO are working in all of these areas, however, this paper will focus on DENSO’s developing FIE technology to realise cleaner combustion.
