Abstract

This chapter delves into the pervasive gender differences in negotiation, which significantly influence labor market outcomes such as wage gaps and occupational segregation. It examines the factors contributing to these differences, including ambiguity in negotiations and the activation of gender stereotypes. The chapter also explores various policy initiatives aimed at mitigating these disparities, such as encouraging women to negotiate more, improving negotiation skills, and implementing institutional changes like banning salary negotiations and increasing pay transparency. The authors critically evaluate the effectiveness and potential pitfalls of these initiatives, highlighting the challenges of 'fix-the-women' approaches and the promising results of 'fix-the-institution' strategies. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for further research and the potential of increased transparency in reducing gender differences in negotiation outcomes.
