Geometry-Assisted Initial Access and Link Maintenance in mmWave 5G Communication Networks

Abstract

The rapid adoption of high-end devices has driven the demand for high data rate services, leading to the introduction of 5G mobile cellular networks. Unlike legacy sub-6 GHz bands, mmWave bands offer sufficient spectrum resources but face challenges due to harsh free space losses. Beamforming with directional antennas has been proposed to address this, but the exhaustive search beam training (BT) protocol used for mmWave communication link establishment is complex and energy-intensive. This article introduces a geometry-assisted scheme to alleviate the high complexity and delay of initial access and management of mmWave links. By leveraging geometric information and a network local controller (NLC), the proposed scheme reduces the number of BT beams and minimizes energy consumption. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in reducing complexity and energy consumption compared to conventional exhaustive-based schemes. The article also discusses the system model, conventional exhaustive-based scheme, and the proposed geometry-based scheme in detail, providing a comprehensive solution to the challenges of mmWave communications in dense network scenarios under mobility.
