Abstract

This chapter investigates the spatial dynamics of tourism by proposing an evaluation framework for destination area attractiveness. It defines attractiveness through three typologies—revealed, perceived, and real—and reviews existing methods for assessing destination attractiveness. The methodology employs the STESY domain framework and integrates the structuration level of destination areas to construct an attractiveness index. The case study focuses on the Vulture area in Basilicata, Italy, analyzing user reviews and ratings from Google API Places to develop a two-dimensional index that considers both the number of reviews and average ratings. The results highlight variations in attractiveness across different destination areas, providing insights into the effectiveness of tourism strategies and the need for targeted investments. The chapter concludes with policy implications and future research directions, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive and data-driven approach to tourism development.
